The Roy of the Rovers story finished in
the Roy of the Rovers comic, in March 1993 . It was brought back to life
again through the Roy of the Rovers monthly from September 1993 to March
1995. In May/June 1997, Roy of the Rovers makes a welcome return in the
Match of the Day magazine.
To set the scene, Roy and Penny had moved
to Italy when Roy took over the manager's job at AC Monza. However, following
a series
of personal traumas, including Penny dieing in a car crash, Roy has
quit the game of football.
He's now back and Melchester
Rovers need him more than ever.

May/ June 1997
- Rocky is playing for Melborough as they beat Rovers 1-0 and Roy becomes
joint owner of the Rovers!
July/
August 1997
- Rovers must win their last game to avoid relegation to Division Two!
September 1997
- McDonald's agree a sponsorship deal with the Rovers and Roy parades his
new season signings.
October
1997
- Rocky and Mel meet up for a drink and Mel informs Rocky that she is the
new Managing Director of Melchester Rovers.
November 1997
- Rovers play Melborough and Rocky is the star of the show - for
Melborough!
December 1997
- Roy wants to re-sign Rocky for the Rovers but thinks it's impossible.
Mel however has other ideas!
January
1998 - Rocky is transfer listed by Melborough for thumping a team mate. All
the talk is of a Rocky and Craig Foster swap deal!
February
1998 - Rovers star Craig Foster contemplates his future before finally signing
for Melborough!
March
1998 - Rocky's return to the Rovers doesn't please his sister and a certain
Rovers full back!
April
1998 - Diana is feeling excluded as Melchester Rovers dominates the Race
family.
May
1998 - Melchester Rovers from Division One take on
Premiership arch rivals Melborough in the FA Cup semi final.
June
98 - Melchester Rovers take on North Vale in the Play Off final for a place
in the Premiership!
July
98 - Mel talks to Don Croughton about the video history of Melchester Rovers
he has compiled and we catch up with Blackie in Ireland.
August
September 98
- Blackie turns scout for Melchester Rovers and spots a "gem of a kid"
whilst in Ireland.
October
98 - Steve Wooten is being interviewed for Football Focus but are his days
in the first team numbered?
November
98 - In the search for a new full back, Roy comes returns to his old club AC
Monza - but just as everything looks to be going well.........up crops a
familiar name!
December
98 - Roy and Mel visit Italy for a bit of business while Melchester Rovers
take on Brooks United in the Worthington Cup.
January
99 - Steve Wooten is dropped and replaced by new signing Dino Marcello,
Rocky gets in trouble and Dino scores on his debut.
February
99 - With Steve Wooten and Rocky missing, Declan McKaffree makes his debut
as Rovers face Division One side Rotherton in a 3rd Round FA Cup tie.
March
99 - It's a busy week with Roy scouting for new talent, an FA Cup replay and a
local derby against Melborough.
April
99 - It's the 6th Round FA Cup against Premiership favourites Western Villa. Steve
Wooten's in at centre half and Rocky is on fire!
May 99
- It's the FA Cup Semi Final against favourites Carford City and the 'Twin
Towers' beckon!
June
99
- It's the FA Cup Final against Johnny Dexter's Castlemere - a real nail biter
of a final!
July/
August
99 - Melchester Rovers are back in the business of picking up trophies!
September
99
- Roy becomes friendly with a newspaper reporter with disastrous consequences!
October
99 - Melchester Rovers take part in the Charity Shield and Roy and Mel consider
players contracts!
November
99 - Family troubles bother Roy but will Declan McKaffree be able to cheer him up?
December
99 - Roy offers his resignation to the Vinter brothers but it is Walford Rovers
boss, Rob Richards who ends up resigning!
January
2000 - Rocky is out injured, Melchester Rovers play Real Corbao in the UEFA Cup and
Roy's family problems continue!
February
2000 - Rocky is still injured whilst Rovers play Melborough and loose 2-0 with former
Rovers Craig Foster scoring both. Roy and Blackie chat over old times.
March 2000
- Roy sorts out his family problems and thanks to Declan, Rovers come back from
a 2-0 half time deficit to draw with the league leaders.
April 2000
- A former team mate of Roy's returns as player manager of Rassburg, as
Melchester Rovers take them on in the UEFA Cup.
May 2000
- Rocky makes his comeback against Castlemere and scores a spectacular goal.
Castlemere are managed by another former team mate of Roy's - Johnny Dexter.
June 2000
- Roy and Mel plot to buy another site for a football ground, but they need Champions
League money to do it - can Rocky and Declan deliver!
July 2000
- Roy sells Mel Park to the Vinter brothers but their bank manager reduces their
loan - a transfer looks the only opportunity to raise the needed cash - but who?
August 2000
- Roy and Penny are at a pre season friendly abroad and they identify who the
player is they have to sell - is it Rocky?
September 2000
- Roy announces that he is sole owner of Melchester Rovers and they kick off the
new season against Tynecaster - with changes ahead!
October 2000
- Roy and the Rovers have a poor start to the season, a player is in jail, the
goalkeeper is injured, Rocky is unsettled and Rovers have their first Champions
league game! November 2000
- 72 year old fan Bill Taylor goes to Melchester Rovers final game at Mel Park
and it's not only the game which is lost..........
December 2000
- A dead body is found at Mel Park and Roy goes to investigate........
January 2001
- Will Rocky hand in a transfer request or will he be tempted by the new
contract Mel has for him..........
February 2001
- Rocky is offered a player/ owner deal and becomes captain for the game against
Holverton, will he take the deal though?
March 2001
- Roy gives midfielder Ben Argent one last chance - will he take it though or
will he mess it up......
April 2001
- In desperate need of cash, Rovers
form is patchy and they face a European Champions league game against
Staulburg of Germany.
May 2001
- Journalist Faith Pritchard
interviews Rocky Race in the last ever Roy of the Rovers story from the
Match of the Day magazine!
