Country: England
Age Range: 25
to 39
My
favourite football team: Bournemouth
Who is/was
my favourite player(s) in the real world: Paulo
Di Canio currently, Luther Blissett of old.
Favourite Character(s):
Victor Boskovic - great man-management!
And the manager of Hot-Shot Hamish & Mighty Mouse's
team - dark haired chap - can't remember his name - but
funny in a ridiculous way!
Roy of the Rovers Memory: I
am 25 years old and first read ROTR when I was about 7. At
the school I went to, there were loads of old magazines in
a cupboard to read during a lunch break when it rained,
and I used to read the same RoTR mag each time (for some
unknown reason I never got bored!!!). I remember it so
well - it was the edition when Carl Hunt was playing
against Melchester, and I think Roy signed him afterwards.
I think he played for Carford City or some bizarre name
like that!
I started subscribing when I was about 11 and every
Saturday morning would wait by the post box for the paper
to arrive with the mag inside it. On the odd occasion when
the newsagent forgot to put the mag in the paper, I would
go up the wall! (Can't believe I'm admitting this!). My
main years were when about two years before they all got
blown up in Basran. I was a huge Victor Boskovic fan, used
to find Hot Shot Hamish and Mighty Mouse hilarious, and
liked Rick Stewart when I had vague notions of being a
goalkeeper.) I'm not old enough to remember his father!)
I thought one of the
cleverest things the mag ever did was to have Kevin Clark
and Johnny Dexter signing for Melchester to keep the
characters in the mag when their respective stories
finished, but why the hell Victor Boskovic the original
foreign manager) was never made Director of Football at
Mel Park is beyond me (its not too late!)
Then...disaster struck. Worse than Basran! We moved house
and all of my copies of ROTR were put in bin liners to
keep them in top condition. You can guess the rest...they
got thrown out by accident - the whole ...... collection.
...... I used that as a chance to make the break and 'grow
up'. In any case, I was starting to go off the stories
which seemed to be getting more and more bizarre - and the
magazine was becoming to commercial for my liking - too
much branding and sponsorship.
Then, while at University in Manchester a few years ago, I
was in a book shop and stumbled across Roy of the Rovers -
The Playing Years (hard back, colour record of the whole
thing from start to finish) This was an amazing discovery
and helped to make up for losing all the mags. It brought
back lots of memories etc.
In all honesty, I don't buy MoTD and have no interest in
the current day stories. Mine are memories. But if the mag
was ever re-launched, you'd find me queuing at the
newsagents."
